Example 1:
The college-level math section of the Accuplacer includes questions on linear and quadratic inequalities.
These types of problems contain 2 variables, usually x and y, and the > or < signs.
If x - 5 < 0 and y > x - 5, then
Solution 1:
First, you should solve the equation for x:
x - 5 < 0 =
x - 5 + 5 < 0 + 5 =
x < 5
Now solve for y by replacing x with its value:
y > x - 5 =
y > 5 - 5 =
y > 0
Example 2:
You will also be asked to simplify advanced mathematical equations:
(-2x2 + x + 1) - (x2 + 5) = ?
Solution 2:
This question is asking you to simplify the variables in the parentheses.
First, you should look to see if there is any subtraction or if any of the numbers are negative.
In this problem, the second part of the equation is subtracted.
So we need to perform the operation inside the second set of parentheses first:
(-2x2 + x + 1) - (x2 + 4) =
(-2x2 + x + 1) - x2 - 4
Then we can remove the remaining parentheses:
(-2x2 + 9x + 1) - x2 - 5 =
-2x2 + 9x + 1 - x2 - 5 =
Now simplify for the integers and common variables:
-2x2 + x + 1 - x2 - 5 =
-2x2 - x2+ x - 5 + 1 =
-2x2 - x2 + x - 4 =
-3x2 + x - 4

Solution 3:
They key trigonometric formulas are as follows:
tan x = sin ÷ cos
sin2 = 1 - cos2
cos2 + sin2 = 1
cos2 = 1 - sin2
